How Does Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Help?
In therapy clients are asked to be actively engaged, working together to develop an “action plan” or homework. Solutions to problems are implemented or changes made in thinking and actions. Cognitive Behavioural Therapists use a wide variety of techniques to help clients change their cognitions (thinking), behaviour, mood, and physiology. CBT is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) www.nice.org.uk
Can Medication Help?
CBT is practical and collaborative, and we can discuss the advantages and disadvantages of medication. Many clients are treated without medication at all. Some disorders, however, respond better to a combination of CBT and medication, prescribed by the client's GP.
What is EMDR?
This specific approach, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is offered in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder and some phobias, when it is judged to be appropriate. Therapy is based on the mechanisms involved in Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, allowing processing of memories and disturbing feelings to take place.
What is Psychosexual Therapy?
Sexual difficulties are common and have many causes, including physical, psychological and emotional. Sometimes they are situational, they only happen under certain circumstances. Most often, they come about through a combination of factors. It may be a problem the client has always had, or it may have developed suddenly and without any obvious reason.
The aim is to help individuals and couples discuss sexual issues and work towards resolving sexual problems.
What does Psychosexual Therapy Involve?
Therapy is available for adults of all ages and sexual orientation. We offer a supportive environment to find out the sexual difficulties and discuss possible solutions. This may or may not involve a partner.
Following a detailed history and formulation of the problem it may be necessary to aim at banishing sexual myths, and learning how to improve communication within the relationship. Approaches may be used to deal with specific difficulties and physical treatments may be discussed, along with the use of medication.
